Warehouse Jobs: Roles and Responsibilities
Warehouse jobs encompass a variety of different roles within a warehouse operation, including general laborers, pick and pack positions, shipping and receiving, and more. Depending on the company, warehouse workers may be responsible for duties that span several of these general categories, or they may work exclusively in a distinct role, such as a forklift operator. Some of the specific job titles common in the warehouse industry include:

Warehouses run the gamut from facilities dedicated to storing one type of product, while other warehouses serve retail giants like Amazon.com and house a wide variety of goods. The responsibilities of a warehouse worker may include unloading delivery trucks, stocking unloaded products and organizing inventory, picking products for outbound shipments, and loading outbound trucks. Additionally, warehouse workers are often tasked with preparing storage receipts or documenting damaged products.

The Dallas, Texas area (part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area) has benefited from a relatively healthy job market thanks to corporate giants like State Farm and Toyota moving their operational hubs to the North Texas region. According to the U.S. News, which ranks Dallas-Fort Worth 15th on its list of the best places to live, the unemployment rate in the area hovers below the national average. Additionally, it ranks 21st on WalletHub’s list of the best cities for jobs in 2017.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), among the 12 largest metropolitan areas in the United States, Dallas ranked first in rate of job growth and second in the number of jobs added from the period between May 2016 and May 2017. Total nonfarm employment in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area was at 3,616,100 in May 2017, marking an increase of 115,800 over the year. Additionally, local nonfarm employment rose 3.3 percent from May 2016 to May 2017, more than twice the national increase of 1.5 percent. This data indicates a prosperous overall job market in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

The metro’s largest supersector, according to the BLS, is trade, transportation, and utilities, which added the second-largest number of jobs with an increase of 23,300 from May 2016. In each of the three industry subsectors, transportation, warehousing, and utilities led growth with an increase of 9,200 jobs during the May 2016 – May 2017 period, which is an impressive 5.1% rate of gain. It’s also worth noting that wholesale trade added 7,500 jobs and retail trade added 6,600 jobs during the same period.
We compiled the current state of the warehouse job market in Dallas, TX using data from a variety of area sources. In total, we found 11,495 total warehouse job results in the Dallas, TX area. We also gathered some research on available jobs in Dallas, TX with more specific job titles across the same eight data sources for the area:

- Warehouse Specialist: 4,168 results

Currently, Dallas is getting attention due to its booming industrial building markets. In fact, Dallas News reports that one of the country’s largest commercial developers, Hines, which is based in Houston, is planning a major warehouse project in Far South Dallas. Hines has built a variety of projects in Dallas already, from industrial office buildings to the Dallas Galleria Mall.
Construction was slated to begin in May 2017, according to the report, and Hines’ senior managing director Palmer Letzerich tells Dallas News that warehouse tenants are migrating to Southern Dallas in droves, with an increasing number of tenants requiring 1 million square feet of space or more. This particular project is slated to be complete in 2018, and the site allows Hines to either build an additional 400,000-square-foot warehouse or expand the initial development to 1.5 million square feet.
Another major development took place in 2015, when the Atlanta-based Seefried Properties and USAA Real Estate built a 1.13 million-square-foot warehouse in the Southfield Park 35 business park in DeSoto. The 157-acre industrial campus is being developed by Seefried in partnership with USAA Real Estate, with an anticipated 2.3 million square feet in all and is one of the largest speculative warehouse projects in North Texas.
While these developments spell tremendous promise for the warehouse industry in Dallas, it’s important to evaluate other data that can provide insights into the overall market, as well. We took a look at LoopNet.com, for instance, a commercial real estate search database, and found just 70 warehouses for sale in the Dallas, TX area. That means that despite the uptick in new industrial development, few companies are disposing of unwanted warehouse space relative to the size of the Dallas region. At CityFeet.com, a similar database focused on industrial space, we found just 179 properties available at the time of this writing.
